As the holiday period fast approaches, the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACTESA) is urging all Canberrans to create or update their Survival Plan to include their holiday destination.
ACTESA Commissioner Georgeina Whelan said while you may not live in a high-risk area, it is important to understand the differing risks at your holiday destination and during travel.
“We want all Canberrans to be able to enjoy their well-earned breaks with the comfort of knowing they will be prepared in the event of an emergency, both on the road and at their final destination,” said Commissioner Whelan.
“After the past few years our community now understands that crises can arise in various forms and can escalate very quickly. Being emergency ready encompasses all forms of crises, including bushfires, grassfires, storms, floods, and extreme heat,”
“Travellers should update their Survival Plan for the area they will be staying in and should know what to do if threatened by an emergency, in addition to ensuring the safety of their Canberra home. How will you leave the area quickly, are you travelling with important supplies such as water in the car, do you know where to receive emergency information while in other States or Territories and have you prepared your home before leaving?”
ACTESA encourages all Canberrans to familiarise themselves with the ‘Be Emergency Ready’ resources located on the ACTESA website to assist in their understanding of specific weather events. Additionally, keep up to date with the weather and warnings at www.bom.gov.au, especially when enjoying outdoor activities, such as hiking and camping.
