FAQ

How can I apply to become a volunteer?

The ACTRFS is not currently undertaking recruitment for new members. Keep an eye on this page for future opportunities.

If you have firefighting experience with other Rural Fire Service jurisdictions and wish to join the ACTRFS please contact the RFS Membership Officer by email on ACTRFS.Membership@act.gov.au including a summary of your experience and qualifications.

How much time do I need to commit to being a volunteer?

The amount of time varies, members are expected to attend regular Brigade Training nights to build and maintain their skills. These are typically held once a fortnight on either a Wednesday or Thursday night from approximately 7:30pm – 9:00pm. The more time members commit to the Service the more they will get from volunteering, though specifics vary for each brigade.

What does being a volunteer involve?

Volunteering with ACT Rural Fire Service is an opportunity to serve the community. You will become part of a disciplined and professional team, developing skills that can be used across all aspects of life. Being part of our volunteer workforce provides plenty of variety, and the type of role you end up with will determine the time and commitments involved.

Operational roles include:

  • Firefighting member of a tanker crew, with the opportunity to be deployed interstate or overseas
  • Aviation Support, which work on airbases to support air operations
  • Remote Area Firefighting, which involves going into remote areas to fight fire without water

Non-operational roles include:

  • Administration
  • Brigade Logistics Support
  • Incident Management Support
Which Brigade should I apply to join?

When selecting which Brigade you would like to apply to join, please consider how long it would take you to travel to the Brigade Shed if required to respond to an emergency fire call or to attend regular training sessions.  Brigades generally recruit Members who live or work in an area within reasonable proximity to the Brigade Shed.
