House fire in Gilmore

ACT Fire & Rescue have extinguished a house fire caused by a burning candle.

Crews were called to a home in Heagney Crescent, Gilmore, just after 10 am.

Two occupants self-evacuated from the property before firefighters arrived.

The fire caused damage to one bedroom, and smoke damage penetrated the rest of the property.

During the festive season, ACT Fire & Rescue reminds all Canberrans that candles used for any reason including decoration, aromatherapy or lighting can pose a fire risk.

Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Be sure the wick ember is no longer glowing.
