High rise apartment complex evacuated

A high rise apartment complex in Lyneham has been evacuated following a small fire.

ACT Fire & Rescue was alerted to the incident at the Axis Apartments on the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Mouat Street just after 4:30pm.

Multiple resources responded including three fire trucks, the Bronto, HAZMAT unit, breathing apparatus support crew and two commanders.

The first crew to arrive discovered a fire within a garbage hopper on the ground floor of the complex and quickly extinguished it.

A large amount of smoke was subsequently sent up the ten floors of the building through the garbage shoot leading to an estimated 50 occupants self evacuating safely.

The smoke, contained to common areas on each level, is now being ventilated by firefighters.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
