This is an EMERGENCY WARNING level warning.
The Kallaroo Fire and the Pialligo Redwood Forest Fire have merged.
The fire is now called the Beard Fire.
People in Beard, Harman, Oaks Estate, Crestwood, Pialligo and Brindabella Business Park are advised to follow warnings and information for the Beard Fire.
People in Beard, Harman, Oaks Estate and Crestwood should:
> SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY. It is now too late to leave.
> If you are not in the area, do not return.
> The fire may pose a threat to all lives directly in its path. People in these suburbs are in danger and need to seek immediate shelter as the fire approaches.
> Driving now is extremely dangerous and potentially deadly.
> Call Triple Zero (000) if your life is under immediate threat.
People in Pialligo and Brindabella Business Park should:
> Stay up to date and monitor conditions.
> Follow ACT Policing directions to safely exit the area.
> Stay in their location, unless directed by ACT Policing to leave the area.
Current situation:
The fire is travelling in a south easterly direction towards Beard, Harman, Oaks Estate and Crestwood (Queanbeyan).
The fire is currently 424 hectares in size.
The fire is out of control but is burning within containment lines.
Firefighters are on scene. Helicopters are water-bombing and providing aerial surveillance.
However, under current conditions, the fire is difficult to control.
The recycling centre in Underwood Street, Beard has been impacted by the Beard Fire and is producing dangerous levels of thick, black smoke, which will reduce visibility and air quality. There are unconfirmed reports of building damage. Assessments will commence when it is safe to do so.
If you are in the area or impacted by smoke you need to:
> Stay inside, close all windows and doors
> Turn off air conditioning and evaporative coolers
> If you are not in the area, do not return
People who are sensitive to smoke, especially those with pre-existing heart and lung conditions, should take extra care during these conditions.
