Volunteer Spotlight – Brooke Turner

I’ve have been an RFS volunteer for 3 years. Last year I completed my advanced firefighting. This year I completed remote area firefighting qualifications—which involved learning how to winch in and out of a helicopter and entering a hovering helicopter. I’ve almost completed the crew leader and incident controller course which will allow me to take lead of a crew and organise all the aspects of an incident. I’m also the Community Education Officer in my brigade at Molonlgo (Belconnen).

I Love firefighting because I have learned a lot in my short volunteering career and the roles we are required to do are very different. One weekend I can be firefighting in the Brindabellas, the next weekend helping the SES with storm damage and the weekend after that at a fete educating the community about fire survival plans and what we do!

I have been/will be going to the World Firefighter Games in Chungju South Korea in September this year and I’ve been to the Echuca Firefighter Games in Victoria just after I joined the brigade. All privileges because I’m a volunteer firefighter!
