Prescribed Burn - Barton, Saturday 23 May 2026

A prescribed burn is planned for today, Saturday 23 May 2026 from 11am on Blackall Street in Barton.

This burn is being delivered by ACT Rural Fire Service in partnership with Ngunnawal Traditional Custodians, alongside Friends of Grasslands, Molonglo Conservation Group, and St Mark’s, recognising the important role of cultural burning in caring for Country.

Prescribed and cultural burns are important land management techniques that can reduce fuel loads, support ecosystem health, and maintain cultural practices and knowledge.

This burn will be conducted as a cool burn - a traditional land management practice that uses low-intensity fire moving slowly across the landscape. Cool burns avoid scorching the earth, helping protect soil health while supporting native flora and fauna to thrive.

With the weather cooling, conditions are ideal for crews to undertake planned burns safely. Each burn is carefully prepared and conducted under strict conditions to help ensure community safety.

All burns taking place in the ACT and NSW will be shown on the ACT Emergency Services Agency incident map: https://esa.act.gov.au/?fullmap=true
