ACT Fire & Rescue remains on scene at a landfill tip fire at a private recycling facility on Pialligo Avenue, where a large pile of waste is burning.
Firefighters were first called to the incident at 9pm last night, and crews arrived to find the 30m x 30m waste pile well alight and billowing smoke.
A significant number of resources have been called upon to fight the fire, including support from the ACT Rural Fire Service, who are providing bulk water tankers, and Canberra Airport's Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service.
ACT Fire & Rescue has deployed multiple pumpers, heavy tankers, Compressed Air Foam System vehicles, a breathing apparatus vehicle, a superintendent, several commanders and other senior officers.
The fire has been contained, however, it has not yet been fully extinguished and the waste pile continues to smoulder. There is no immediate risk to life or property.
ACT Fire & Rescue is working with site operators to use heavy machinery to break down and flatten the pile, which will assist crews in fully extinguishing the fire throughout the day.
Traffic management remains in place near the intersection of Pialligo Avenue and Scherger Drive, affecting the westbound lane. The road remains open, however drivers travelling westbound from Queanbeyan into Canberra are asked to slow down and follow directions.
Significant smoke remains in the area to the south of Canberra Airport. Individuals with respiratory conditions, or those affected by smoke, are advised to remain indoors and close windows until conditions improve.
