Home fire escape plan

If there is a fire in your home, everybody in the house should know the Home Fire
Escape Plan.

This should be planned ahead and practiced so everybody knows what to do if a fire occurs. To prepare a Home Fire Safety Plan you should:

  1. Have a working smoke alarm in the house;
  2. Draw a floor plan of your house showing two exits from each room;
  3. Practice your fire escape plan especially if you have children or elderly people
    living with you;
  4. Display your fire escape plan prominently on your fridge and discuss the plan
    with any overnight guests;
  5. If the smoke alarm goes off because of a fire or smoke everybody should leave
    immediately;
  6. Shut the doors behind you as you exit your home;
  7. Crawl low under smoke where there is fresh air;
  8. Check doors for heat before opening;
  9. Everybody should agree on a meeting point outside the front of the house eg at
    the mailbox;
  10. Once outside the house STAY OUT. Never go back inside a burning building for
    anything including pets; and
  11. Call the Fire Brigade on 000.
