Smoke spreads from hazard reduction burn

The ACT Rural Fire Service is currently conducting a hazard reduction burn in Fyshwick tonight which is producing a large amount of smoke over adjoining suburbs.

There are no other fires burning in the ACT at this time.

People with breathing difficulties should remain indoors until the smoke clears.

The ACTRFS Jerrabomberra Brigade commenced stage one of the burn on Dairy Road near the Monaro Highway from at 6pm at the ActewAGL Fyshwick Sewage Treatment Plant.

Three heavy tankers, two light units, a command vehicle and 20 personnel are conducting the burn covering a total area of approx three hectares.

The purpose of the burn which is scheduled to be extinguished by 10pm tonight is to allow ActewAGL to assess the condition of the lagoon embankments at the Fyshwick Sewage Treatment Plant in order to accurately scope any required maintenance.
