New Ambulance and Fire & Rescue station for West Belconnen
The new Ambulance and Fire and Rescue Station in Charnwood, West Belconnen was completed in October 2013. The new station was officially opened on 18 October 2013 by the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell MLA.
The Emergency Services Agency (ESA) held an ‘open day’ for the public on Saturday 19 October 2013. Over 3,000 locals, from the very young to our more senior citizens, visited their new station that day.
Construction of the new station by Manteena Pty Ltd included a roundabout located at the intersection of Lhotsky Street and Charnwood Place (the main entry/exit for the Charnwood shops). The new roundabout has greatly improved traffic flow in that area and has been well received by locals.
Territory Plan variation to enable new stations in south Tuggeranong and Aranda
In 2012, the ESA submitted Planning Reports to the Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate (ESDD) for the purpose of seeking a variation to the Territory Plan to enable the development of new stations proposed for South Tuggeranong and Aranda. The ESDD conducted a public consultation process from July to September 2012 in relation to the ESA proposals. The variations to the Territory Plan were approved in the Legislative Assembly in May 2013.
New Fire & Rescue station for South Tuggeranong
The ACT Government has allocated funds for construction of a new Fire & Rescue Station in South Tuggeranong. The new station sited immediately next to the roundabout intersection of Tharwa and Drakeford Drives will ‘replace’ an existing fire station in the Tuggeranong Town Centre.
On 17 February 2014, the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell MLA, officially ‘turned the first sod’ on the site of the new station. The new station is being built by ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd. It is anticipated that the new station will be operational by early 2015.
