Hazard burns across Canberra today

The ACT Rural Fire Service is conducting hazard reduction burns across Canberra today.

From 8am today, crews will be on site at the Yarramundi Grass Lands next to the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre.

This burn began last weekend and is expected to be completed today. The burn covers an area of approximately 9 hectares.

From 10am today, a hazard reduction burn will be undertaken at the Covenant Christian School, corner of Drakeford Drive and Woodcock Drive in Gordon.

The burn is 2.5 hectares in size and consists of exotic and native grasses.

Firefighters will remain on site until the area is declared safe.

Temporary smoke cover may occur. Every effort is made to conduct the burns in weather conditions that will minimise the impact of smoke in the area.

The Health Directorate advises that people with asthma, other chronic respiratory and/or chronic cardiac diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by the smoke.

People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties.
